The Building Blocks: Bits and Bytes

First, let's understand the language of data. All digital information is made of bits, which are tiny electrical signals that are either on (1) or off (0).

  • Bit (b): The smallest unit of data.
  • Byte (B): A group of 8 bits. A single text character, like the letter 'A', is one byte.
  • Megabit (Mb): Roughly one million bits.
  • Megabyte (MB): Roughly one million bytes.

A crucial point is that internet speed is measured in Megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are measured in Megabytes (MB). Since there are 8 bits in a byte, a 100 Mbps connection can download a 12.5 MB file in one second (100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s).

  • How it's calculated: The process is reversed. Your browser sends several chunks of data from your device to our test server. We measure how much data is successfully transmitted over a set time to determine your upload rate.
