The Building Blocks: Bits and Bytes
First, let's understand the language of data. All digital information is made of
bits, which are tiny electrical signals that are either on (1) or off (0).
- Bit (b): The smallest unit of data.
- Byte (B): A group of 8 bits. A single text character, like the letter
'A', is one byte.
- Megabit (Mb): Roughly one million bits.
- Megabyte (MB): Roughly one million bytes.
A crucial point is that internet speed is measured in Megabits per second
(Mbps), while file sizes are measured in Megabytes (MB). Since
there are 8 bits in a byte, a 100 Mbps connection can download a 12.5 MB file in one second
(100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s).

- Analogy: Imagine a water pipe. Download speed is a measure of how wide
that pipe is—how much water (data) can flow through it to fill your bucket (your device)
every second.
2. Upload Speed ☁️
Upload speed measures how quickly you can send data from your device to the internet. This is

backing up photos, and online gaming.
- How it's calculated: The process is reversed. Your browser sends
several chunks of data from your device to our test server. We measure how much
data is successfully transmitted over a set time to determine your upload rate.
- Analogy: Using the same pipe, upload speed is how quickly you can send
water from your bucket back to the source. For many connections, this pipe
is narrower than the download pipe.
3. Ping (Latency) ⚡
Ping isn't a measure of speed, but of responsiveness. It's the
reaction time of your connection, measured in milliseconds (ms). A low ping is essential for

- How it's calculated: We send a tiny data packet from your device to
the server and measure how long it takes for the server's acknowledgment to return.
